A Side Beading Plane with Lignum Vitae boxing by Israel White, Philadelphia, PA. Israel White operated a plane making shop and was listed as a planemaker in Philadelphia, PA. from 1831 to 1839. White made a variety of planes, often containing exotic woods. The mark on this plane is rated two stars in American Wooden Planes, (example E). Two stars denotes rare with only between 100 and 250 known examples. His planes are found with various markings on them, some are extremely rare with less than 10 known examples. Planes sometimes have other initials on them along with the Israel White mark, these initials were those of the journey men that worked for him. Some of the journey men later became planemakers and had their own business. Good+
